ASUU proffers solution to ongoing strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has observed that resolving its ongoing strike action could be done by the adoption of the transparent payment platform, University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS). Dr Socrates Ebo, Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State chapter, in a statement, lamented that the deep-rooted penchant for corruption within government ethos is all out to frustrate its deployment, saying that UTAS has been proven to be a flawless payment platform. According to him, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), has been decisively proven to be a porous, easily compromised payment platform. The chairperson opined that the IPPIS has been ineffective in curtailing waste of resources, stressing that on the contrary it has been used to pad payrolls and used to effect all manner of fraudulent deductions from workers’ salaries. Pupils in Anambra public schools rejecting promotion to new class because of food — School Feeding Scheme Manager

The Programme Manager, National Homegrown School Feeding Scheme in Anambra State, Mrs Eriken Uzoamaka, has expressed regret that pupils in classes One to Three across Public Primary Schools in the state were rejecting promotion to senior classes because of food. Uzoamaka explained that the rejection was as a result of the pupils delight on the kind of food they were served which usually surpass that of pupils in classes 4 to 6. According to her, even those that agree to be promoted, usually come to their junior class (Primary 3), especially on Wednesdays, to struggle for food with others. Speaking in Awka after a two-day capacity building workshop on Enhancing Social Protection Programme in Nigeria, organised by the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Uzoamaka said that efforts were on ground to solve the challenge. Prof Adenike Oladiji takes over as FUTA vice-chancellor

History was made in the 41-year-old Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA, Ondo State as the institution’s first female and the eighth substantive Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, was inaugurated. Oladiji was appointed a Professor in 2011 after joining the services of the University of llorin in 1992. She is a Biochemist. The University’s Pro-Chancelllor and Chairman, Governing Council, Ambassador Godknows Igali described the process of her appointment as methodical, thorough and transparent. UniAbuja expels two professors for sexually harassing students

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na-Allah, says the institution has gone tough on lecturers sexually harassing students, as two professors had been dismissed for the offence. Na’Allah told newsmen on Monday in New York that the university had introduced a policy on sex abuse on campus, which had been published. Na-Allah, who was on a two–day visit to the U.S., to meet with the University of Abuja Alumni Association, USA chapter, to solicit support for the institution, said, ”female students needed to be protected.” According to him, the institution is committed to high moral standards and will not tolerate any act of misconduct perpetrated by its staff against students. “I have dismissed two professors since I became the vice- chancellor. UNIPORT final year students burnt to death in a car crash

The family of a final year student of the University of Part-Harcourt has been thrown into mourning following her untimely demise on Monday night, June 21, 2022. The deceased student named Jennifer Omoerere Ubiri was burnt to death alongside three other travelers in a car accident that occurred at Opokuma junction, along East-West Road, Bayelsa state. Until her death, Jennifer was the Vice President of the National Union of Urhobo Students Worldwide (NUUS) and was on her way to Port Harcourt, Rivers state from Bayelsa when the accident occurred.  The President of NUUS Worldwide, Ishokare Ishaku Emuejevoke Justice, confirmed the sad news on Wednesday, June 22.

Flood sweeps away junior secondary school students in Ondo

A Junior Secondary School student of Mount Carmel Girls School, Ikare Akoko, was on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, swept away by a flood following a heavy downpour in the Semusemu area of the state.  The student identified as Motunrayo John was said to have been playing with erosion with her legs inside the water when she mistakenly slipped in and was carried away in the water. Only her mathematical set was found by a search party. The Divisional Police Officer in Ikare Akoko, Mr. Olatujoye Akinwande, who confirmed the incident said the school principal, Mrs. Ajoke Asiwaju, reported the matter at the police station. He said the search and rescue operation had commenced.
